Nepenthe patio photographed by Morley Baer circa 1949.

Nepenthe by Morley Baer (1949)

July 11, 2025

We just had a chance to head down the coast to Big Sur for the first time in a while. This included a couple trips to Nepenthe, which is one of my favorite places of all time. When we got back home I looked into some of the histories of the restaurant and came across this image by the great photographer Morley Baer. This was taken in 1949 when the big old oak tree was still on the patio. I found the image here.
